3 Tips to Support Hormone Health
There is so much information out there about supporting hormone health that it can feel overwhelming to know where to start. While there are many factors that influence our hormones, these are the top three areas I would focus on first to create a strong foundation for healthy hormone production and balance.
Tip 1: Reduce or Remove Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs)
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are substances that can mimic, block, or interfere with the body's natural hormones. They are commonly found in our environment, food packaging, personal care products, household cleaning products, and even some manufactured materials.
Because hormones act as chemical messengers throughout the body, even small disruptions can influence menstrual cycles, fertility, thyroid function, metabolism, and overall hormonal balance.
While it's impossible to eliminate every toxin from our environment, reducing your daily exposure can significantly decrease your body's overall toxic load.
Simple Ways to Reduce Your Exposure
Gradually swap conventional personal care and cleaning products for low-tox alternatives.
Avoid heating or storing food in plastic containers, particularly in the microwave, as heat can increase the leaching of chemicals into food.
Choose glass or stainless-steel drink bottles and food containers where possible.
Prioritise whole, minimally processed foods over ultra-processed foods containing long lists of artificial additives and preservatives.
Wash fruit and vegetables thoroughly to help reduce pesticide exposure.
When possible, choose fragrance-free products, as "fragrance" can often contain a mixture of undisclosed chemicals.
Remember, this doesn't have to happen overnight. Small, sustainable swaps over time can make a meaningful difference.
Tip 2: Reduce Inflammation
Chronic, low-grade inflammation can have a significant impact on hormone production and communication throughout the body. When inflammation is present, the body often perceives it as a stressor, increasing the production of cortisol (our primary stress hormone).
Over time, this can contribute to hormonal imbalances, affect thyroid function, promote insulin resistance, worsen PMS symptoms, and even impact ovulation and fertility.
Supporting the body by lowering inflammation helps create an environment where hormones can be produced, converted, and utilised more efficiently.
Anti-Inflammatory Hacks
Include healthy fats daily, such as avocado, extra virgin olive oil, nuts, seeds, and oily fish, which provide essential building blocks for hormone production.
Eat a colourful variety of fruits and vegetables to increase your intake of antioxidants that help protect cells from oxidative stress.
Prioritise omega-3 fatty acids through foods like salmon, sardines, walnuts, and chia seeds.
Support gut health with fibre-rich foods and fermented foods, as gut health and inflammation are closely connected.
Regulate your nervous system through activities such as walking, Pilates, breathwork, meditation, or spending time outdoors.
Prioritise quality sleep, as inadequate sleep can increase inflammatory markers and disrupt hormone regulation.
Tip 3: Fuel Your Body Adequately
One of the biggest mistakes I see—particularly among active women—is under-fuelling.
When the body doesn't receive enough energy, it shifts into survival mode. To conserve energy, it begins to suppress functions that aren't essential for immediate survival. One of the first systems to be affected is the reproductive system.
This can result in irregular or absent periods, disrupted ovulation, altered thyroid function, elevated stress hormones, slower metabolism, reduced bone density, and decreased fertility.
Food isn't just fuel—it's information. Every meal provides your body with the nutrients it needs to build hormones, support ovulation, regulate blood sugar, and maintain healthy metabolism.
How to Nourish Your Hormones
Build balanced meals that include quality protein, healthy fats, fibre, and carbohydrates.
Aim for around 30 grams of protein at each main meal to support blood sugar balance, muscle repair, and hormone production.
Don't fear carbohydrates—they're your body's preferred energy source and play an important role in supporting thyroid function and reproductive hormones.
Healthy fats are essential, as hormones are made from cholesterol and fatty acids.
Eat consistently throughout the day instead of skipping meals or relying on coffee to get through the morning.
Listen to your hunger cues and ensure you're eating enough to support your activity levels and lifestyle.
Hormone health isn't about finding one magic supplement or following the latest trend on social media. It starts with creating an environment where your body feels safe, nourished, and supported.
