The Basics Edit - The Foundations of Health

In a world where we're constantly being told to take more supplements, try the latest wellness trend or follow a new diet, sometimes we need to take a step back and focus on the basics.

As a naturopath, I believe that supporting your health starts with the foundations. Before looking at complex protocols or adding more to your routine, it's important to look at how you're eating, sleeping, moving and managing stress.

These everyday habits play an important role in supporting your gut health, hormones, energy levels and overall wellbeing.

01. Nourish your body

Food is one of the foundations of health. It's not about restricting food groups or following the latest diet trend, but rather giving your body the nutrients it needs to function.

Focus on:

  • Eating balanced meals with protein, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats and fibre.

  • Including a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables to support nutrient intake and gut health.

  • Eating regularly throughout the day to support energy levels and avoid going long periods without food.

  • Prioritising wholefoods while allowing flexibility and enjoyment.

02. Support your nervous system

Our nervous system plays a role in almost every function of the body, including digestion, sleep, energy and our response to stress. While stress is a normal part of life, being in a constant state of stress can affect how we feel and function day to day.

A few simple ways to support your nervous system:

  • Get outside for some natural light and fresh air.

  • Incorporate breathwork or a few minutes of intentional breathing into your day.

  • Make time for activities that bring you joy.

  • Take breaks throughout the day rather than constantly pushing through.

  • Find moments to slow down, particularly around mealtimes.

03. Prioritise quality sleep

Sleep is essential for recovery, cognitive function, hormone regulation and overall health. It's not just about how many hours you're sleeping, but also the quality and consistency of that sleep.

A few ways to support your sleep:

  • Aim for a consistent bedtime and wake-up time.

  • Get natural light exposure in the morning to support your circadian rhythm.

  • Limit bright lights and screen time in the lead-up to bed.

  • Create a calming evening routine that allows you to wind down.

  • Avoid leaving yourself with too little time to recover between busy days.

If you're consistently waking up feeling unrefreshed despite getting enough hours of sleep, it's worth looking into your sleep quality, stress levels and other potential contributing factors.

04. Move your body daily

Movement is about so much more than physical fitness. It can support cardiovascular health, metabolic function, mood, digestion and overall wellbeing. You don't need to be doing high-intensity workouts every day to see benefits.

Focus on:

  • Incorporating daily walking and general movement.

  • Finding exercise you genuinely enjoy, whether that's Pilates, strength training, running or swimming.

  • Breaking up long periods of sitting throughout the day.

  • Allowing time for rest and recovery.

  • Finding a balance between movement and your body's individual needs.

05. Support your gut health

Your gut plays an important role in digestion, nutrient absorption, immune function and communication with the rest of your body.

Supporting your gut health doesn't necessarily mean taking multiple probiotics or following restrictive diets. Often, it starts with the basics.

  • Aim for a diverse range of plant foods throughout the week.

  • Gradually increase fibre intake according to your individual tolerance.

  • Include prebiotic-rich foods such as oats, legumes, onions and garlic where tolerated.

  • Stay hydrated to support regular bowel movements.

  • Eat mindfully and give yourself time to enjoy your meals.

  • Prioritise sleep and stress management, which can also influence digestive function.

Your gut is unique to you, so if you're experiencing ongoing bloating, abdominal discomfort or changes in bowel habits, it's important to investigate the underlying cause rather than simply masking the symptoms.

06. Make time for rest and recovery

We often focus so much on what we can add to our routines that we forget the importance of doing less. Rest is an essential part of maintaining physical and mental wellbeing. Constantly pushing through fatigue without allowing time for recovery can leave you feeling depleted. Rest doesn't have to be earned. It's a necessary part of looking after your health.

Consider:

  • Scheduling rest days around your exercise routine.

  • Taking regular breaks throughout your working day.

  • Making time for hobbies and activities you enjoy.

  • Recognising when your body needs a slower day.

  • Creating boundaries around work and personal time.

The takeaway

You don't need a complicated wellness routine to start supporting your health. Often, it's the small, consistent habits that make the biggest difference over time. Eating nourishing meals, moving your body, prioritising sleep, supporting your nervous system and allowing yourself time to rest are all important foundations.

Before adding more to your routine, ask yourself: have I got the basics covered?
